Cran Career Spotlight: Mechanic

Overview

A Mechanic will perform general care and upkeep of the marsh equipment.  Also responsible for general labor functions required for cranberry marshes. 


What is this career like?

Cranberry Mechanics will perform work associated with planting, cultivating, irrigation, and harvesting of cranberries.  They will also perform mechanical maintenance and repairs of the marsh equipment.

Some of the things a Cranberry Mechanic might do:

  • Implementation and execution of effective, efficient, orderly, and timely repair and maintenance program for all equipment located on property with frequent oversight from Marsh Manager.

  • Documenting services performed on all marsh equipment in an equipment maintenance log.

  • Following procedures for bidding process, for equipment repairs and replacement. 

  • Assisting Marsh Manager in formulating operating and capital budgets on the property based on equipment condition and requirements.

What skills are needed?

  • Associates degree in auto, diesel, or similar mechanics. 

  • Previous experience in farming and equipment operation and maintenance desired

  • Must be able to work well with management and communicate well with others.

  • First Aid Training preferred.

What education is required?

As associates or bachelor’s degree in a field of mechanics is preferred.  

The following high school courses are helpful:  agricultural education, mathematics, small engines, welding, electrical ed, and other shop classes.
